The Tower of London

General information:

- Was used for amoury, as palace and prison
- Kings lived there
- Nowadays the crown jewels and weapons are placed in the tower
- The "White Tower" is the oldest building of the fortress

Famous inmates:

- Ranulf Flambard (bishop)
- Elisabeth I. (Queen of England)
- Richard III. (king of England)
- Rudolf Heß (Hitler's agent)

History and information about Ranulf Flambard:
- important minister and territorial lord
- employee in an office of Wilhelm I.

Because Ranulf caused trouble, he was called "Flambard". After Wilhelm Heinrich I. became king (Ausdruck: was crowned king). Heinrich I. didn't like persons from France (Ranulf was from France) and so he put Ranulf in the jail. Ranulf was the first person in the tower. But with a rope that was in wine cask (Weinfass), he maked the escape possible.

Beefeaters:

- Guards of the Tower of London
- Originally they protected the British crown jewels
- Today they are a tourist attraction
- Official name: Yeomen Warders

Why are they called Beefeaters?
In eralier times they haven't enough money for beef. Because of that they get beef as payment (beef-eaters).
